Swedenborg Salons: Are Psychedelic Experiences Mystical?

Psychedelic therapy is increasingly being used to treat PTSD and substance use disorders, and to help terminally ill people come to greater acceptance of death. Many people who have taken psychedelics describe the experience as one of the most important of their lives.
The clinical story is only part of the picture. Cultures around the world have used these medicines for centuries to encounter the Divine, and many secular people today report spiritual experiences of their own. What do we make of this? What is actually happening when someone has a mystical experience on a psychedelic? Is it simply the brain hallucinating? How does science make sense of mystical states, and what do these experiences share with mystical states that arise without any substance?
We’ll begin with a presentation on the intersection of spirituality and psychedelics from Rev. Rich Tafel and Kelly Crouch, with Dr. Reynolds sharing insights from her clinical practice and answering your questions. From there, we’ll ask how spiritual communities can help people integrate what they have learned, and what the limitations of these medicines are. Along the way, we’ll look at thinkers who shaped how modern practitioners reconcile the scientific and spiritual dimensions of mystical experience, including Emanuel Swedenborg, William James, and Carl Jung.
Light refreshments will be provided, with VG and GF options.
