SURVIVAL KIT OF LIFE

A Modern-Day Guide to the Darker Ways People Survive

ONE-DAY COURSE MANUAL

Presented by:

Dr. Louise Swart

Love Doctor • Therapist • Educator

Venue:

Bushhaven

Bothaville, Vaal River, North West

Course Fee:

R1,800 per person

IMPORTANT NOTICE

This course explores the darker behaviours people sometimes use to survive, protect themselves, gain control, avoid vulnerability, or deal with difficult situations.

The purpose of this course is to create awareness, insight and understanding.

The behaviours explored include:

  • Lying
  • Deception
  • Manipulation
  • Pretending and being fake
  • Bitterness
  • Meanness
  • Hard-heartedness
  • Vindictiveness
  • Unforgiveness
  • Emotional withdrawal
  • Revenge
  • Control
  • Distrust
  • Emotional games
  • Building walls
  • Becoming insensitive
  • Keeping people at a distance

These behaviours may sometimes feel protective in the short term, but they can carry significant personal and relationship consequences.

This manual is not intended to encourage abuse, exploitation, dishonesty or deliberate harm.

Instead, we examine these behaviours honestly so that participants can understand why people use them, what they accomplish temporarily, what they cost eventually, and how to recognize them in themselves and others.

WELCOME

There are many courses that teach us how to become better people.

This isn't one of them.

At least, not at first.

Survival Kit of Life takes us somewhere different.

It asks:

What if you stopped trying to be the nice person all the time?

What happens when you are hurt?

What happens when somebody betrays you?

What happens when you discover that being kind doesn't always protect you?

What happens when you become tired of being taken advantage of?

People develop survival strategies.

Some become hard.

Some become angry.

Some become manipulative.

Some learn to lie.

Some stop trusting.

Some become vindictive.

Some become emotionally unavailable.

Some decide:

"Nobody will ever hurt me again."

And they build a wall.

The problem is that the wall designed to keep the bad people out can also keep the good people out.

This course explores that paradox.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this one-day experience, participants should have a deeper understanding of:

  1. Why people develop survival behaviours.
  2. How pain can change personality and behaviour.
  3. Why dishonesty can become a coping mechanism.
  4. How manipulation develops.
  5. Why people become emotionally hard.
  6. How bitterness can become an identity.
  7. Why revenge can feel satisfying.
  8. Why forgiveness can become difficult.
  9. How people use emotional walls for protection.
  10. How destructive survival strategies affect relationships.
  11. How to recognize these behaviours in yourself and others.
  12. How to choose healthier responses when you are ready.

PART 1

THE SURVIVAL INSTINCT

Every human being has a basic instinct to survive.

We protect ourselves from:

  • Physical danger
  • Emotional pain
  • Rejection
  • Humiliation
  • Betrayal
  • Abandonment
  • Loss
  • Shame
  • Fear
  • Disappointment

Sometimes survival means fighting.

Sometimes it means running.

Sometimes it means freezing.

And sometimes it means changing.

A person who has been hurt repeatedly may eventually decide:

"I am never going to be vulnerable again."

That decision can create an entirely different way of living.

REFLECTION EXERCISE

Complete the following:

When I feel threatened, I normally:

When someone hurts me, I normally:

The behaviour I use most to protect myself is:

PART 2

THE ART OF LYING

Lying is one of the oldest human survival strategies.

People lie for many different reasons.

They may lie to:

  • Avoid consequences
  • Protect themselves
  • Protect somebody else
  • Gain approval
  • Avoid rejection
  • Hide shame
  • Control information
  • Create a particular image
  • Escape responsibility

But there is an important distinction between:

protecting yourself from danger

and

deliberately deceiving someone for personal advantage.

The first may sometimes be defensive.

The second can become destructive.

The Survival Question

Ask yourself:

"What am I afraid would happen if I told the truth?"

That question often reveals more than the lie itself.

PART 3

DECEPTION

Deception is more than simply telling an untruth.

It can involve:

  • Omitting important information
  • Creating false impressions
  • Pretending
  • Hiding intentions
  • Presenting only part of the truth
  • Allowing someone to believe something that is not true

Deception can become a lifestyle.

A person may eventually become so accustomed to managing appearances that they no longer know where the performance ends and the real person begins.

Reflection

Where in my life am I presenting an image rather than reality?

PART 4

MANIPULATION

Manipulation occurs when someone attempts to influence another person's thoughts, emotions or behaviour through indirect or deceptive means.

Common patterns can include:

  • Guilt
  • Fear
  • Emotional pressure
  • Threats
  • Silent treatment
  • Excessive flattery
  • Playing the victim
  • Withholding affection
  • Creating jealousy
  • Blaming others

Manipulation often begins with a simple belief:

"If I cannot control the situation directly, I must find another way."

The short-term result may be control.

The long-term result can be damaged trust.

RECOGNITION EXERCISE

Have you experienced any of these?

☐ Guilt being used against you

☐ Someone refusing to speak to punish you

☐ Someone making you responsible for their emotions

☐ Someone deliberately creating jealousy

☐ Someone constantly playing the victim

☐ Someone changing the story to make you look responsible

What did that behaviour make you feel?

PART 5

BEING FAKE

Sometimes people create a version of themselves for public consumption.

They become:

The successful one.

The strong one.

The happy one.

The perfect partner.

The person who doesn't care.

But behind the performance may be:

  • Fear
  • Loneliness
  • Insecurity
  • Shame
  • Anger
  • Sadness

Being fake can become exhausting.

Eventually the question becomes:

Who am I when nobody is watching?

PART 6

BITTERNESS

Bitterness is often unresolved pain that has been repeatedly revisited.

A person may say:

"I remember what they did."

And they may be right.

The event happened.

But remembering the event and continuing to live inside the event are different things.

Bitterness can become a permanent residence in the past.

Reflection

What pain am I still carrying?

Who am I still angry with?

What would change if I stopped allowing that person to occupy my mind?

PART 7

BEING MEAN

Meanness can become a defence mechanism.

Some people discover that if they are unpleasant enough, people stop approaching them.

It works.

But there is a cost.

The behaviour that keeps unwanted people away may also keep away people who genuinely care.

Ask yourself:

Am I difficult because I am strong, or because I am afraid of being hurt?

PART 8

THE HARD HEART

A hard heart can look like strength.

It can sound like:

"I don't care."

"It doesn't matter."

"People are all the same."

"I don't need anybody."

But sometimes "I don't care" actually means:

"I cared so much that caring became painful."

Emotional hardness can protect.

But it can also isolate.

PART 9

VINDICTIVENESS

Vindictiveness is the desire to make someone experience pain because they caused you pain.

The thinking can become:

"You hurt me, so I will hurt you."

The problem is that revenge can create a cycle:

Pain → anger → retaliation → more pain → more anger.

Ask yourself:

"What am I actually trying to achieve?"

Is it justice?

Is it acknowledgement?

Is it an apology?

Is it closure?

Or is it simply making another person suffer?

PART 10

UNFORGIVENESS

Forgiveness is often misunderstood.

Forgiveness does not necessarily mean:

  • Forgetting
  • Approving
  • Excusing
  • Trusting again
  • Reconnecting
  • Removing consequences

Forgiveness can simply mean:

I refuse to allow what happened to control the rest of my life.

Sometimes forgiveness is not something you give to another person.

Sometimes it is something you give yourself.

PART 11

EMOTIONAL WALLS

Walls are built for a reason.

They protect.

But every wall has two sides.

The outside says:

"You can't hurt me."

The inside sometimes says:

"Nobody can reach me."

Consider the difference between:

A Boundary

"I know what I will and won't accept."

and

A Wall

"Nobody gets close enough to hurt me."

Boundaries protect relationships.

Walls can prevent relationships from developing.

PART 12

THE SURVIVAL PERSONALITY

When survival behaviours become habitual, they can become part of a person's identity.

A person may begin saying:

"That's just who I am."

But perhaps it isn't.

Perhaps it is:

"That's who I became."

There is an enormous difference.

You may have learned:

  • To distrust
  • To attack
  • To withdraw
  • To manipulate
  • To lie
  • To punish
  • To control
  • To avoid vulnerability

Learning something does not mean you must keep it forever.

PART 13

THE SURVIVAL KIT

Participants should identify their own personal "survival tools."

My Survival Kit

When I feel threatened, I:

When I feel rejected, I:

When I feel betrayed, I:

When I feel powerless, I:

When I feel vulnerable, I:

When I am angry, I:

PART 14

THE PRICE OF SURVIVAL

Every survival strategy has a price.

Ask yourself:

Survival StrategyWhat it protects me fromWhat it may cost meLyingConsequencesTrustDeceptionExposureAuthenticityManipulationPowerlessnessHealthy relationshipsBitternessForgetting injusticePeaceHardnessVulnerabilityConnectionRevengeFeeling powerlessFreedomUnforgivenessFeeling exposedEmotional peaceIsolationRejectionBelongingBeing fakeJudgmentAuthenticityControlUncertaintyFlexibilityPART 15

THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION

After examining all these behaviours, ask:

"Is this behaviour actually helping me survive, or is it preventing me from living?"

There is a difference between:

surviving life

and

living life.

Survival gets you through today.

Healing allows you to experience tomorrow differently.

PART 16

PERSONAL SURVIVAL MAP

Complete the following:

My biggest emotional trigger is:

My automatic reaction is:

The survival behaviour I learned was:

Where did I learn it?

What did it protect me from?

What has it cost me?

What would I like to do differently?

PART 17

GROUP DISCUSSION

Discuss the following:

  1. Can being too nice become a survival problem?
  2. Is there a difference between kindness and weakness?
  3. When does self-protection become isolation?
  4. Can anger sometimes be useful?
  5. Can forgiveness exist without reconciliation?
  6. Can boundaries be mistaken for rejection?
  7. Why do people sometimes hurt others before they can be hurt themselves?
  8. What happens when survival becomes an identity?
  9. Can a person become addicted to conflict?
  10. What does it mean to finally feel safe?

PART 18

THE TURNING POINT

The purpose of understanding our darker behaviours is not to shame ourselves.

It is to become conscious.

Because what we cannot see, we cannot change.

The turning point begins with:

Awareness

"I do this."

Then:

Understanding

"I know why I do this."

Then:

Responsibility

"I accept that I am responsible for what I do."

Then:

Choice

"I can choose something different."

FINAL EXERCISE

MY NEW SURVIVAL KIT

Complete these statements:

Instead of lying, I can:

Instead of manipulating, I can:

Instead of becoming bitter, I can:

Instead of seeking revenge, I can:

Instead of becoming hard-hearted, I can:

Instead of shutting people out, I can:

Instead of pretending, I can:

Instead of holding onto anger, I can:

MY PERSONAL COMMITMENT

I understand that many of my behaviours developed for a reason.

I understand that protecting myself is not the same as hurting others.

I accept responsibility for the way I respond to difficult situations.

I will become more conscious of my automatic survival behaviours.

I will recognize the difference between healthy boundaries and destructive walls.

I will decide which survival strategies still serve me and which ones I am ready to release.

COURSE SUMMARY

SURVIVAL KIT OF LIFE

We have explored the darker side of human survival:

Lie.

Deceive.

Manipulate.

Pretend.

Become bitter.

Become mean.

Become hard.

Seek revenge.

Refuse to forgive.

Build walls.

These behaviours exist.

People use them.

Sometimes they learned them because life taught them that vulnerability was dangerous.

But the ultimate lesson is this:

A survival strategy can save you from something while simultaneously preventing you from experiencing something better.

The goal is not to become perfect.

The goal is to become conscious.

Because once you understand why you became who you became, you finally have the opportunity to decide who you want to become next.
