About this Event

Content Summary

This training will present an overview of the research base for the impact of domestic abuse and coercive control on a child’s physiological, psychological, cognitive and emotional development.

Christina will also present therapeutic approaches to support children and their carers to help the child to move towards recovery and to build a sense of safety and resilience from this highly traumatising experience.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of completing this training, participants can learn about:

  • What research into a child’s exposure to domestic abuse and coercive control tells us about its impact on a child’s physiological, cognitive, psychological and emotional development and behaviour
  • The impact on a child when witnessing a parent being abused
  • How abuse and coercive control can also be the child’s experience of the abusing parent and how this negatively affects the child
  • How children and adolescents may carry self-blame for not protecting the victim parent
  • For children who are looked after, how to help the child understand why they are in care as a result of protection from exposure to domestic abuse
  • How professionals can support children who have been exposed to domestic violence psychologically and emotionally
  • How to help children who are re-enacting the abuse and violence they have been exposed to
  • The importance of helping children affected by domestic violence to develop a recognition of their strengths and positive coping resources

Self Care Notice:

Please note this training will be exploring topics that may be deeply personal for delegates, depending on their lived experience. There will be a break included on the day and one to one support will be available if needed, but please do reflect on whether you feel able to attend – your safety and well being is of paramount importance.

Her special interest is in early childhood development and the impact of trauma on a child’s developing capacities, functioning and behaviour. From her experience working with children who have endured developmental trauma characterised by neglect and abuse, she has found it necessary to use a comprehensive integrated approach in order to address the multiple complexities which such children present with.

Christina returned to live in Ireland in 2016 and currently works as a Developmental Trauma and Attachment specialist providing training, assessment and clinical interventions on behalf of Tusla Child and Family Agency, and in private practice with birth and adoptive families.
