About this Event
One brush. Black ink. Rice paper. Endless possibilities.
What if creating something beautiful wasn't about adding more, but knowing when to stop?
Step into the fascinating world of Sumi-e, traditional Japanese ink painting on rice paper, where just a few expressive brushstrokes can capture the movement of bamboo, the delicacy of a flower or the quiet beauty of nature.
This is more than a painting workshop. It's an invitation to slow down, discover a centuries-old artistic tradition and experience a little of Japan's creative spirit in the heart of London.
From Ink Stick to Artwork
We'll begin with one of the most beautiful rituals of traditional Japanese painting: preparing our own ink.
You'll discover how to gently grind a traditional Japanese ink stick (sumi) against an inkstone (suzuri), adding water to create rich black ink. This centuries-old practice is an essential part of the Sumi-e experience, inviting patience, attention and a connection with the materials.
Then, using traditional brushes and delicate rice paper, we'll explore how a single brushstroke can express movement, emotion and character.
You'll discover how to work with different shades of ink, from deep black to the softest grey, and how to make empty space an essential part of your composition.
What You'll Experience
- Prepare your own ink using traditional Japanese ink sticks and an inkstone
- Paint on authentic rice paper using traditional brushes
- Explore expressive brushstrokes, ink washes and delicate tonal variations
- Discover the philosophy of simplicity, balance and the beauty of imperfection
- Create your own Sumi-e artwork to take home
- Enjoy a welcoming creative atmosphere with fellow art lovers
- Finish our experience together with authentic Japanese green tea
There is no need to paint perfectly. In Sumi-e, every brushstroke has its own character, and sometimes the most beautiful part of a painting is what remains untouched.
