WithinOncology was created to demystify the scary world that cancer patients and their loved ones are thrown into following diagnosis. We will explore what patients and families need, how WithinOncology started, and what we provide: information on drug development, cancer biology, prevention, and new emerging therapies that anyone can understand.
About the Speakers
Laura Mainz, PhD, is the co-founder of WithinOncology. After caring for her father through nine years of Multiple Myeloma, she made it her mission to make cancer science understandable for patients and families. A former research associate at the Salk Institute and an active patient advocate with Blood Cancer United, she now works as a Medical Science Liaison at a pharmaceutical company, where she educates physicians on clinical data to support safe and effective treatment.
Corey Jones-Weinert is a passionate science communicator and co-founder of WithinOncology. He shares his enthusiasm for exploring the frontiers of our biological understanding with those that don’t get to experience this excitement first-hand: the public. Corey developed his passion for science communication while studying telomeres and cancer in Milan, Italy, during his doctoral studies. He brought that passion with him to San Diego where now communicates science professionally in multiple avenues. For WithinOncology, Corey describes the biological mechanisms that drive cancer and allow for its therapeutic treatment in terms that all can understand, with the hope that some readers may even enjoy the learning opportunity.
Valentina, the co-founder of WithinOncology, is an eclectic biologist who has followed her curiosity across three countries - from studying cancer-killing viruses in Bologna, to cancer and neurodegenerative disease research in Milan, to her current work as Research Scientist at the Salk Institute in San Diego. Along the way she developed a parallel passion for science communication, and now co-writes for WithinOncology, focusing especially on cancer prevention and the everyday choices that put health knowledge into people's hands.
