Structural Integrity in Fencing – Workshop with Ville VälimäkiOn 9 January 2027, we’re welcoming Finnish instructor and competitor Ville Välimäki to Dresden.
Ville brings over 600 recorded tournament fights and more than 500 wins across several weapons. He ranks among the world’s leading longsword fencers and teaches longsword, sabre and messer at EHMS in Finland. His teaching experience includes workshops on several continents, including SoCal Swordfight in the USA.
As an instructor, Ville takes an analytical, precise approach to fencing. He looks closely at the details that make an action work and connects them to its application against an opponent. Tournament preparation, footwork and tactical adaptation are central to his work.
For this workshop, we’ll spend a full day exploring structural integrity: how body structure, sword position, distance and timing combine to produce solid parries, and how we can turn those parries into our own attacks.
We’ll work through solo and partner drills, then put these principles into practice through fencing games. The focus is on longsword, with principles that also apply to other weapons.
The workshop is open to all experience levels and is particularly relevant to fencers with competitive ambitions.
