This Scientific Evening explores how stress shapes memory, emotions and behaviour at the level of the brain and hormones. We will look at how stress hormones help us encode what matters most — but can also block access to studied information when we need it most. The discussion then turns to employee burnout: what it really is, how common it is, and why it is so often misread as a personal failing rather than a consequence of working conditions. Finally, we examine why stress responses differ so markedly between individuals, focusing on the role of stress and sex hormones in how we perceive and adapt to pressure.
