SAVE THE DATES! The State Historical Resources Commission's final meeting of 2026 is currently scheduled for Thursday and Friday, Nov. 12 and 13 at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, both in person and virtually. Commissioners will consider several properties to be recommended for placement on the National Register of Historic Places, including Bakersfield’s Woolworth Building (pictured).Constructed in 1950, the retail store served the public until 1994 when the business closed. The building was rehabilitated under the Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives program from 2022 to 2025 into a mixed-use building with a live music venue and variety of commercial and office tenant uses. The building remains an excellent example of a purpose-built Woolworth retail building, with a rare intact lunch counter, and is also a good local example of a Late Moderne-style commercial building in downtown Bakersfield.
A complete list of nominated properties to be considered by the commission is available for review at https://ohp.parks.ca.gov/pending. A full agenda for the meeting will be available 10 days prior at www.parks.ca.gov/PublicNotices.
