About this Event
This course provides comprehensive, hands-on training in Sports Field Best Management Practices (BMPs) for professionals responsible for maintaining athletic fields and sports turf. Designed for sports field managers, parks and recreation staff, school maintenance personnel, contractors, and municipal employees, the class focuses on practical techniques that improve field quality, player safety, resource efficiency, and environmental stewardship.
Participants will learn the foundations of sports field BMPs, including soil-water-plant relationships, field assessment methods, irrigation efficiency, water conservation strategies, nutrient management, and regulatory considerations. The training combines classroom instruction with field demonstrations, providing real-world experience with irrigation system evaluation, catch-can audits, fertilizer and spreader calibration, soil test interpretation, and techniques to prevent nutrient runoff.
By the end of the course, attendees will have the knowledge and tools needed to maintain healthier, safer, and more sustainable athletic fields while protecting local water resources and supporting environmental compliance. The program emphasizes practical, science-based solutions that result in better playing surfaces, cleaner water, and stronger communities.
