About this Event
This in-person training is for qualified PT instructors and other gym professionals supporting people with spinal cord injury (SCI).
About the programme
The full-day, practical SCI Awareness – Train the Trainer programme is delivered in a gym setting. It aims to build instructors’ confidence in supporting people with SCI, including awareness of red flags and adapting exercise safely.
- SCI awareness and functional considerations
- Key safety areas, including autonomic dysreflexia, skin integrity and transfers
- Practical, gym-based exercise adaptations
- Scenario-based learning alongside people with lived experience of SCI
Why this training
The programme builds on a pilot held at DLR Leisure Loughlinstown in January 2026, delivered in partnership with the Sports Partnership, local gym staff, and clinicians from the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) and DCU. The day brought together instructors, physiotherapists and people with lived experience of SCI. Feedback was positive, particularly on increased confidence, safety awareness and practical application.
People leaving the NRH can experience a significant drop-off in access to safe, appropriate local exercise. Many instructors also report lacking confidence in supporting people with SCI, particularly around red flags and exercise adaptations. The programme was developed to address this gap.
Local collaboration
Following the pilot, a wider rollout is being planned with Local Sports Partnerships, with an opportunity to work together in Waterford. Potential local collaboration includes identifying an accessible gym or partner facility, linking with inclusion officers and local programme staff, engaging instructors, trainers and relevant students, and supporting a community pathway to exercise for people with SCI.
The training is funded through the HSE National Lottery Grant.
