Southbound Performs Eat a Peach Live!Join Southbound for a night dedicated to the music of the Allman Brothers Band, as they bring the classic album "Eat a Peach" to life on stage at Shank Hall on Saturday, December 19, 2026. This ABB tribute show pairs a "best of" set of Allman Brothers favorites with a full, start-to-finish performance of Eat a Peach — every track, in order, the way it was meant to be heard.
About the Album:
Eat a Peach is a double album by the Allman Brothers Band, released on Capricorn Records. Produced by Tom Dowd and blending live and studio recordings, it stands as the band's third studio album and second live album — and one of the most beloved records in Southern rock history.
The album grew out of the band's breakthrough live release, At Fillmore East, in July 1971. Riding that momentum, the Allman Brothers set out to record a straightforward studio follow-up. Those plans changed forever on October 29, 1971, when lead guitarist and founder Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident in the band's hometown of Macon, Georgia. Eat a Peach became his final album with the group, a fact that shapes the way it's remembered to this day. The finished record weaves together studio tracks cut at Criteria Studios in Miami between September and December 1971 — some with Duane Allman, some recorded after his passing — alongside live performances from the band's 1971 shows at the Fillmore East. Its centerpiece is the sprawling half-hour jam "Mountain Jam," long enough to fill two entire sides of the original double LP. Other standouts include Gregg Allman's "Melissa," a song his late brother loved, and Dickey Betts' "Blue Sky," which went on to become a classic rock radio staple.
The cover art, designed by W. David Powell and J. F. Holmes of Wonder Graphics, shows the band's name painted on a peach truck, with a mural of mushrooms and fairies unfolding across the gatefold. The album's title comes from a Duane Allman quote: "You can't help the revolution, because there's just evolution... Every time I'm in Georgia, I eat a peach for peace."
On release, Eat a Peach reached number four on Billboard's Top 200 Pop Albums chart, later went platinum, and remains one of the best-selling albums in the Allman Brothers' catalog.
