The League of Women Voters of Sioux Falls and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) of South Dakota will host a South Dakota Ballot Measures Forum ahead of the November 3 election.
The forum will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 1, at USD–Sioux Falls in Avera Hall, 4801 N. Career Ave., Sioux Falls. The event is free and open to the public, with free parking available.
South Dakota voters will consider four proposed constitutional amendments placed on the ballot by the South Dakota Legislature. Representatives supporting and opposing Amendments I, J, and L are invited to discuss the measures. Because Amendment K has no opposition, a Republican and a Democrat are invited to discuss why they support the amendment.
The amendments are:
- Amendment I: Repeal expanded Medicaid coverage in South Dakota if federal funding for the expansion falls below 90 percent.
- Amendment J: Clarify that an individual must be a U.S. citizen to be eligible to vote.
- Amendment K: Create a trust fund for the state’s unclaimed property tax dollars.
- Amendment L: Require future constitutional amendments to receive at least 60 percent of the vote to pass, rather than a simple majority.
