A captivating exhibition exploring the mechanics of work, decision-making and collective action through the interlaced histories of radical workers' theatre and activism. Concerted by Stanley Picker Fellow Sophie Huckfield and company, A Socially Useful Production: The Participation Waltz traces the development of the Lucas plan, a profound proposal developed by workers at Lucas Industries in 1976. Faced with a changing industrial landscape and the looming threat of redundancy, the workers proposed an alternative vision for production.
Marking the 50th anniversary of the Lucas Plan, the exhibition follows its legacy into the development of the Participation Waltz, a production created by the Broadside Workers' Theatre. Bringing together archival material, performance, research and storytelling, the exhibition reveals the roles played by workers' knowledge in the development of new means for working, organising and decision making.
