The new year can be a natural time to reflect on your past and dream about your future, both rich veins for song writing. Whether January in Ely represents a "staycation for songwriters" if you're local or a "destination New Year's dedication" for visitors, this class is the perfect way to start off 2027 in a completely fresh way.
Designed for students to take anywhere between one and four sessions depending on interest and ability, these three hour classes every Thursday can take up all your head and heart space for an entire month.
During sessions, a guitar will be on hand but this class is focused on generating written content and examining themes. Students will receive a notebook and a pen so we all start off on the same foot (please select the required materials fee at check out, though students registering for multiple sessions need only purchase this once.)
Students can also expect to experiment between classes with optional prompts from the instructor. This may include making helpful deep dive lists, writing journal entries that reveal topics, creating poems that are almost songs, or even making full songs themselves with attention to verse, bridge, and chorus construction. Whatever past efforts or experience, everything in this class will enrich students' sense of soul and sense of self.
There will be two optional opportunities for students to meet others and share their work: a mid-month, early evening gathering at the instructor's home and an end-of-month performance evening at the Ely Folk School for all involved and their guests.
Instructor: Courtney Yasmineh
Tuition: $45 per class, Materials: $23
