Our October class sold out!! We are offering a second round of the same class: Somatic Clown Workshop.Indepth Somatic Clown Workshop with Joan Howard
Sundays Nov 8, 15, 22, 29
We recommend attending all classes as they build on one another.
Dive deep into play, personal discovery, and clown creation in this foundational clowning workshop!
The clown lives in a state of play, physically open, emotionally transparent, and endlessly curious. Through a willingness to follow impulses, embrace the unexpected, and transform failure into possibility, the clown reveals what is most human, creating moments of laughter, connection, and surprise.
In this workshop, you'll discover and develop your unique clown by amplifying the wisdom of your somatic body. Through playful exercises, physical exploration, and guided improvisation, you'll uncover the rhythms, gestures, movements, and quirks that make your clown uniquely yours. Rather than creating a character from the outside in, you'll reveal your clown from the inside out, following your body's natural impulses as they become a fully embodied clown form.
Through solo, partner, and ensemble explorations, you'll deepen your clown’s presence, responsiveness, and relationship to others. You’ll leave with a core clown form that you can continue to play with, explore, and create from—both in performance and in your ongoing creative practice.
Open to all experience levels.
ABOUT JOAN:
Hi! I’m Joan E. Howard, first and foremost, I’m a clown. The professional kind. Sometimes I wear a nose, sometimes I don’t.
I’m also a play maker, teacher, tinkerer, and physical theater artist creating work at the intersection of clown, participatory theater, performance art, and installation. My practice is rooted in the belief that play, creativity, and clowning are inherent to everyone — and I’m passionate about helping people unleash their inner idiot.
As a teacher and facilitator, I focus on cultivating presence, authenticity, resilience, and joyful connection through clown. I’m the CPO (Chief Play Officer) of the State of Play, co-creator of the ensemble company Idiot String, and co-director of ClownCorps, a social clowning organization. I’ve taught clown and play since 2012, both internationally and in the SF Bay area where I served as core faculty at the Clown Conservatory, and spent seven years clowning with the Medical Clown Project. I’m thrilled to become a part of the clown community here in my new home New Orleans!
