What does it mean to be a good neighbor amid trauma, violence, and fear? How might pluralism and interfaith solidarity help communities resist nationalism and authoritarianism – and renew democracy from the ground up? Join Rev. Dr. Susie Hayward, A02, F06 for a lecture and conversation exploring the ethic and practice of “neighborism” that emerged in response to ICE’s Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis. Drawing on her experience alongside faith leaders, organizers, and immigrant communities, Hayward will consider what Minneapolis can teach us about resisting fear, rebuilding civic trust, and creating communities in which everyone belongs.

About the Speaker
Rev. Dr. Susie Hayward, A02, F06, is the Minister for Justice Organizing and Adult Faith Formation at Minneapolis’ Creekside United Church of Christ. She has spent two decades working in human rights, peacebuilding, and teaching in Minneapolis, Washington, DC, and Boston. After years studying religion, violence, and peace at Harvard and Tufts, practicing Buddhism in Nepal, and working on-the-ground for peace in Sri Lanka, Hayward joined the Religion and Peacebuilding program at the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP), where for fourteen years she led efforts to understand religious dimensions of conflict and advance efforts engaging religious actors and organizations in peacebuilding. Hayward also helped build the Religion and Public Life program at Harvard Divinity School. She is part of the Freedom Trainers, a network of experienced educators and organizers working to counter democratic backsliding by equipping people with the skills and strategies of noncooperation, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs at Georgetown University.
