How do you write the history of a country? How do you write the history of a country when its borders and populations are radically unstable? How do you write the history of a country in the context of an ongoing war that questions the very right of this country to exist? These are all questions that we face while working on our co-written monograph, A Concise History of Ukraine. In our presentation we will first outline the structure of the book and explain how we have designed the temporal and spatial contours of our story. Then, we will address the core methodological problems of this project and share how we have solved them: how to think more productively about the concepts of state, nation and empire; how to write about multiple groups without hierarchies and minoritization; how to weave together disparate historiographies that often contradict each other. Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 created an urgency for understanding Ukraine, which has already resulted in several books and projects. However, they are written in the space of existential crises and we will discuss the challenge of incorporating nuanced and critical analysis in a time of war.Dr. Mayhill Fowler is Professor of History at Stetson University and affiliated faculty in the Program in Theater Studies at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv
