What happens when technology pays attention not to us as individuals, but to what is happening between us?SocialFields is an interactive artwork from Scott Jones Studio that explores synchrony, collective behaviour and the strange, often invisible ways we connect when we gather together.
At its centre is a glowing digital fire. Audience members take turns to gather around it, holding a hand-carved controller that senses movement and pulse. As they move, become still and fall in and out of rhythm with one another, their collective behaviour begins to shape the light, sound and movement of the space.
There is no score to follow and no right way to play. Each gathering becomes a unique social improvisation, created collaboratively by the people who choose to take part.
For this special Future Yard event, SocialFields will evolve across the evening from an intimate participatory artwork into a live collective experience.
Featuring contributions from She Drew The Gun, Germanager and Only Human, the artists will interact with and perform around Social Fields, with sound, audience movement and the behaviour of the group becoming part of an evolving audiovisual environment.
Part artwork, part experiment and part gathering, the evening asks a simple question: what might happen if our future technologies were designed to create space for connection rather than compete for our attention?
