About this Event
"It's a soul-sucking job. It really is a soul-sucking job."
Just weeks into her legal career, a young Australian solicitor took to TikTok to share her frustrations about working in the profession. The video went viral and just days later, she'd lost her job.
The incident sparked debate about professional conduct, freedom of expression and the increasingly blurred lines between our personal and professional lives online.
However, while social media can put a professional reputation at risk, it can also be one of the most valuable tools for building one.
So, where's the line? And how can professionals use social media to their advantage without compromising the credibility they've worked hard to establish?
In this lunchtime session, Dr Julia Day, Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of New England, will unpack the legal and ethical considerations of social media use. Drawing on recent real-world cases, Julia will explore the increasingly blurred boundaries between personal expression and professional responsibility, and what employees and employers need to understand about the risks, obligations and potential consequences of their online activity.
Jessica Bradbery, communications professional and Regional Connector with UNE SMART Region Incubator, will then turn the conversation towards opportunity. Drawing on more than 15 years of experience in communications, PR and brand strategy, Jessica will explore how professionals can use social media to build their personal brand, demonstrate expertise, establish credibility and develop meaningful professional connections.
Whether you're already active on LinkedIn, occasionally post about your work or have never given much thought to your personal brand, you'll leave with a clearer understanding of what to consider, what to avoid and how to make your online professional presence work for you.
For legal practitioners and other professionals who want to navigate social media with greater confidence and credibility.
