The danger of publishing art - inked letters on a page, brushstrokes on a canvas - is that they capture a moment in history, with all its inherent philosophies and prejudices, for future audiences to then interpret according to their own fashions and sensibilities. Some audiences are able to use a lens of historical sensibility, recognising that something is of its time (and perhaps did not do a very good job of questioning the hows and whys of that time!) while other artists are lauded as being ahead of their time.
Jack Kerouac fits somewhere in amongst these content creators, with a cutting edge, stream of consciousness style of prose, but the content itself full of gratuitous racism and misogyny.
Join us as we discuss Kerouac’s best known novel, On the Road.
