THE ENERGY BODY: Yoga Between Evidence and Experience - BWY & SOAS Yoga Summit
What if everything you've been taught about yoga as "just" physical postures is only half the story? Join us for this Yoga Summit at SOAS University of London, where leading yoga scholars, historians and yoga practitioners come together to explore Yoga's hidden dimension: the energetic frameworks of prāṇa, cakra and kuṇḍalinī that have shaped yoga practice for over a thousand years.
This Yoga Summit is brought to you by the British Wheel of Yoga, the national governing body for yoga in England and Wales, in collaboration with SOAS.
This year we're asking the big questions about yoga's energy body:
🧐 What is the energy body in yoga?
🧐 How has it been understood across yoga's history?
🧐 How does it work, and can it actually be measured?
Our keynote speaker is Prof Shaman Hatley from the University of Massachusetts, tracing the extraordinary history of the tantric body in yoga from its roots in early Śaiva traditions right through to how kuṇḍalinī and the chakras came to capture the modern yoga imagination.
Alongside him we have an incredible line-up of yoga researchers and yoga teachers:
🧑‍🏫 Dr Marleen Thaler on the real risks of a kuṇḍalinī awakening gone wrong.
🧑‍🏫 Dr Ruth Westoby on the body in early Haṭha Yoga.
🧑‍🏫 Dr Magdalena Kraler unpacking prāṇāyāma's true place within the yogic path.
🧑‍🏫 Dr Marissa Clarke bringing breath, movement and sound into dialogue with contemporary yoga practice and research.
And it's not just talk...
🧘‍♀️ Swami Saradananda, yoga teacher, mentor and author of Chakra Meditation, leads you through the energy of the chakras twice during the day through guided yoga practice, but save your energy for the finale: she closes the entire yoga summit with a collective practice bringing the whole room together as one, an immersive yoga experience unlike anything else on the programme and the perfect way to end the day.
🧘‍♀️ BWY tutor Sarah O'Connor will also introduce Tsa Lung, an ancient Bön Tibetan yoga practice using breath and movement to clear the body's energy channels, something most attendees will never have experienced before.
🧑‍⚖️ Dr Suzanne Newcombe from the Open University moderates the day, tying together yoga scholarship and yoga practice in a way that's genuinely rare to see under one roof.
Whether you're a yoga teacher, a yoga practitioner, a yoga researcher or simply yoga-curious, this is a yoga event that will change how you think about what yoga actually is.
