About this Event
Friday, November 13 | 9–11 AM
Fourmile Link Trailhead, Betasso Preserve | Fourmile Canyon
Curious about slash pile burning? Join Boulder Watershed Collective, Four Mile Fire Protection District, City of Boulder, and local fire and forestry professionals for a morning in the field! Learn how pile burning helps complete forest treatments, reduce hazardous fuels, and support healthier forests. Bring your questions!
Through demonstrations and discussion, we’ll explore:
- Pile burning basics: How slash piles are prepared and burned, and all that goes into planning a burn.
- Conditions and requirements: Weather considerations, regulations, and procedures for burning.
- Smoke awareness: How smoke factors into burn planning and what nearby communities should know.
- Protecting forests and water infrastructure: Hear from City of Boulder and Tram Hill project partners about how a variety of forest treatments including prescribed pile burning help reduce wildfire risk around critical water infrastructure.
Will there be active burning?
Active burning will depend on weather and site conditions, with final confirmation likely just 24–48 hours before the event. The field day will take place at the scheduled time and location whether or not burning is possible. If conditions don’t allow active fire, demonstrations and discussion will walk participants through burn processes and procedures without burning.
Where to meet & what to bring
Plan to park onsite at the Fourmile Link Trailhead. The demonstration area is a short walk from the trailhead. Dress for a November morning outdoors, including warm layers, a coat, and sturdy boots suitable for potentially snowy or icy ground. Be prepared for cold and wind—we may burn even if there’s snow!
Register to receive event details and updates about planned burning. We look forward to seeing you in the field!
