Bokstavligen.

SKYMMER OCH SER – Paris
ENGLISH
With the name SKYMMER OCH SER, the artists seek to introduce or identify an activity that is integral to both their practices. SKYMMER (OBSCURES) can refer to something hidden, to meaning concealed behind what is hidden. The absence of a subject makes the phrase ambiguous in all its simplicity—is it something that obscures, or someone? Perhaps even myself? SER (SEES) speaks of the desire to study, to pay attention to detail. Connections and causes. To engage with the materiality of materials. To see the meaning in what stands before us. Literally.

SKYMMER OCH SER – Paris
With this exhibition at Gallery Box, we return to Paris, both as a lived experience and as an idea. We have both spent time there as artists-in-residence, at Cité internationale des arts and IASPIS at the Swedish Institute, respectively. Here, Paris also becomes a metaphor for a multilayered world in which different times, narratives and material traces coexist.
In urban history, the concepts of thick spaces and urban half-shadows are used to describe how urban space is shaped by an interwoven fabric of the real, the represented and the narrated, and how this fabric deepens everyday life over time. Urban half-shadows emerge in the background, alongside or at the margins of what is planned and invested in.
Through sculpture and photography, we return to and reuse experiences, images and materials from our respective archives. In the exhibition space, these elements are brought together to form new connections. What already exists acquires new meanings through displacement, repetition and encounters between different materials and spaces.Drawing on our experiences of Paris and other cities, we return to questions about the significance of place for artistic practice. What does a place do to artistic work? Where does architecture begin and end in the body?
SKYMMER OCH SER is the artistic duo of Jenny Magnusson and Patrik Elgström, who bring together their respective practices of sculpture and photography. Their collaboration functions as an artistic think tank centered on place, space, architecture and materiality. For several years, they have worked together on artistic projects, in teaching and in exhibitions, both nationally and internationally.
