About this Event
Embroidery artist Jessica Grady will begin the workshop by showing you various ways to add colour and pattern to paper through mixed media approaches using paint, collage and different resists such as bleach, tape and masking fluid. You will build up a selection of sketchbook pages with different patterns and designs which will inspire your textile art later in the workshop. After a lunch break you will use your textured sketchbook papers to act as an inspiration (or even materials!) towards a 3D stitched and embellished piece of textile art.
As well as traditional fabrics and threads, Jessica will demonstrate how you can use unusual materials such as washers and waste plastics to create your own colourful embellishments, sequins and beads, and also for adding texture and patterns to your sketchbook papers! You will leave the class with a sketchbook bundle of mark-making ideas and a developed stitched fabric sample.
Artist Bio
Jess is an embroidery artist, originally from the North Yorkshire coast who works from my home studio in West Yorkshire. My original textiles are a bold and tactile exploration of colour and pattern through hand stitching and embellishment. I use a combination of processes within all of my embroideries including traditional hand embroidery techniques, hand dyeing, printing and embellished surfaces – that utilise unconventional and recycled materials.
I'm passionate about utilising mixed media and recycled materials such as painted metal washers, hand dyed plastic waste, packaging and stripped electric cables within my hand embroidery work. These materials are transformed and manipulated to create intricate embellishments. This juxtaposition of unusual media with traditional techniques invites the viewer to look closer – creating curiosity.
