Online dating is now one of the most common ways people meet romantic partners, but somehow we still have no idea what we’re doing.
You choose a few photos, write a couple of prompts, and try to present the best version of yourself. But is that actually you, or are you performing a version of yourself you think other people will want? And when everyone else is doing the same thing, how much can you really know about someone from their profile?
Why do we stop on one person and swipe past another? What are we actually looking for when we have thousands of people to choose from? And are the strategies people use on dating apps actually helping them find someone they’ll like in real life?
In this lecture, Sarra Jiwa, a PhD student at the University of Toronto, will look at the psychology behind how we present ourselves, judge other people, and make romantic decisions online. Using psychological research alongside some stories from her own research, she’ll break down what seems to work, what doesn’t, and what dating apps may be changing about the way we choose who we want to date.
