This concert features acclaimed Australian flutist Eliza Shephard, the 2022 ABC Young Artist of the Year, performing Carl Nielsen’s captivating Flute Concerto with Stonnington Symphony under the baton of conductor Timothy Phillips. The programme opens with the Australian premiere of Emilie Mayer’s Symphony No. 2, bringing the music of a remarkable nineteenth-century composer back into the spotlight. Once compared to Beethoven and dubbed “the female Beethoven” for her achievements as a symphonic composer at a time when women faced significant barriers in the musical world, Mayer later fell into obscurity. Today, renewed interest is bringing her distinctive musical voice and significant contribution to the orchestral repertoire to light. Her symphony offers audiences a rare opportunity to discover her work before the concert concludes with Beethoven’s iconic Symphony No. 5, creating a compelling musical connection between two composers whose works, separated by generations and circumstance, share the stage in a celebration of Beethoven’s enduring legacy and Mayer’s rediscovered talent.
