Jan Is Important, originally published in Joyland Magazine, is a story about a strange triangle at the heart of a community theater: Jan, who runs lights and is paralyzed by violent erotic fantasies; Veronica, who runs sound and is driven by violent erotic fantasies; and Marky, an alcoholic, sweaty actor who's both Jan's obsession and Veronica's side piece. After a brief bathroom line conversation with Marky unlocks the full potential of Jan's powerful mind, her sudden and terrifying confidence sends shockwaves through the cast and crew, as Veronica finds herself increasingly fixated on this important new Jan. Lines are crossed, secrets are revealed, and there is also some major property damage.
About the Short Story Project:
Led by Zachary Desmond and Olivia Facini and supported by Undiscovered Works, the Short Story Project creates low-tech, high-creativity theatrical stagings of short stories. Our performances provide a fun, free way for audiences to encounter a new author and to experience in a new way the work of a writer they might know already. We host our events at independent bookstores around New York City to bring communities together in familiar, welcoming surroundings and to encourage further exchange between theater and literature, between avid theatergoers and devoted book lovers.
