We look forward to welcoming Dr Kate Waddington to share insights arising from excavating the Whitchurch site near Kineton and Shipston.Excavated between 2006 and 2009 by Dr Kate Waddington and Professor Niall Sharples, the Whitchurch site, near Kineton and Shipston, is an exceptional Late Bronze Age - Early Iron Age ‘midden’ site dating to around 800–500/450 BC. Midden sites of the transitional period are vast settlement mounds rich in pottery, animal bone and rare metalwork. The evidence suggests it was a focal point for feasting, ceremony and funerary rites, and experimentation with new technologies, during a time of profound social change when iron was first being introduced. This talk will explore how the Whitchurch discoveries are reshaping our understanding of social and cultural transformation in the West Midlands during this pivotal period in prehistory.
