In the summer of 1642, King Charles I raised his standard in Nottingham and began to raise troops. On the morning of 22nd October , the King sent one of six Infantry Brigades, half his larger guns and an escort of Horse to take Banbury.
That evening his nephew, Prince Rupert, clashed with Parliamentary Horse and took prisoners from whom they discovered that Earl Essex' force was entering Kineton. Rupert's first reaction was to gather some Horse and attack them but was persuaded to notify the King. The Royalist army was ordered to regroup along the ridge at Edgehill...."
