Our Graveyards, Cemeteries, and Soldiers Tour leads you into some of the darkest corners of Sharpsburg’s past. We begin at the site where a single artillery blast ended the lives of a dozen or so men in an instant—an eerie patch of ground where the air still feels unsteady. From there, we drift past an old cemetery whose headstones lean like tired sentinels, and where passersby have reported hearing strange, beckoning voices speaking what sounds like an unearthly language.
The path then unfolds into the tale of a ghostly soldier on a white horse—a figure said to appear only to misbehaving children, and never with a friendly purpose. And finally, we return to Bender’s Public House and Eatery for one last tale: the unsettling legend of the Black Dog, a shadowy presence known to follow guests.
The Soldiers' Passageway explores the remarkable role the citizens of Sharpsburg played in the terrible days and months following the battle. When the fighting ended, local families found dead and wounded soldiers in their yards, barns, gardens, and even inside their homes.
Residents were forced to bury the dead, care for the wounded, and endure the disease and suffering that swept through the town during the long winter that followed.
Yet some believe not all of the soldiers ever left.
For generations, Sharpsburg residents have reported seeing ghostly Confederate soldiers moving quietly through the town after dark. One detail appears again and again in these accounts: the soldiers are almost always traveling west, toward the Potomac River. Are they merely echoes of history, or are they still searching for the crossing that would carry them home?
Along the way, guests will hear at least 4 stories such as:
• Jacob McGraw's Ghost – The mysterious tale of a soldier whose presence may still linger in Sharpsburg.
• Charley King's War – The tragic story of a young drummer boy caught in the horrors of battle.
• The Lone Confederate Sentry – Repeated sightings of a solitary Confederate soldier standing watch long after the armies departed.
• The Rohrback House Remembers – Strange experiences connected to one of Sharpsburg's most historic homes.
• The Broken Confederate Artillery – A story linking battlefield destruction with lingering supernatural reports.
• Indian Head Hill / Copperplate Hill – Legends, history, and unexplained encounters associated with one of the area's most intriguing locations.
Walk the streets of Sharpsburg after dark and discover why so many visitors leave convinced that the Battle of Antietam never truly ended.
