Although the film was poorly received by many critics on release——its extravagant combination of Beatles music, 1970s rock stars, psychedelic fantasy, campy humor, bizarre costumes, and surreal plot has helped it develop a cult following and reputation as a cult classic. Today, it is often remembered less as a conventional Beatles adaptation than as a fascinating time capsule of the late-1970s pop-culture moment: gloriously excessive, strange, star-studded, and undeniably entertaining for those willing to embrace its eccentricity. The film features an extraordinary cast of musicians and performers, including Peter Frampton, The Bee Gees, Steve Martin, George Burns, Donald Pleasence, Frankie Howerd, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Billy Preston, with the cast performing nearly two dozen Beatles songs. With Sandy Farina & Dianne Steinberg.
113 minutes. Directed by Michael Schultz (Car Wash, Cooley High, The Last Dragon).
