Introduction to Sgraffito Pottery at Artventures 🎨🏺
Discover the art of Sgraffito Pottery and transform an everyday piece of pottery into something completely your own!
Join us at Artventures for a fun, beginner-friendly introduction to this beautiful pottery decorating technique. Choose a mug, plate, or vase, then learn how to use color and carving techniques to create patterns, illustrations, lettering, and designs directly on your pottery.
No pottery or painting experience is necessary. Our Artventures instructor will introduce you to the process and guide you as you create your own one-of-a-kind piece.

Each participant will choose one piece of pottery:
• Mug
• Plate
• Vase
Once you’ve selected your piece, it becomes your blank canvas!
✨ What is Sgraffito?
Sgraffito is a traditional decorative technique that involves applying a layer of color to pottery and then scratching or carving through the surface to reveal the contrasting pottery underneath.
Instead of simply painting your design onto the surface, you actually draw by removing areas of color.
The technique can produce crisp lines, interesting textures, intricate illustrations, bold patterns, and beautifully detailed designs.
And the best part? You don't need to be an artist to get great results.
🎨 Learn, Experiment & Create
Your Artventures instructor will demonstrate the basic sgraffito process and introduce you to the tools and techniques you'll use to create your design.
You’ll learn how to:
• Apply color to your pottery
• Plan a design before carving
• Create lines, shapes, and patterns
• Scratch and carve through the colored surface
• Experiment with different textures and line thicknesses
• Add details and finishing touches to personalize your piece
Once you understand the basics, you'll have plenty of creative freedom to make your pottery your own.

Create:
• Flowers and botanical designs

Introduction to Sgraffito Pottery is designed to be approachable for beginners while still giving more experienced artists plenty of opportunities to experiment.
Our instructor will be available to demonstrate techniques, answer questions, and help you bring your ideas to life.

🔥 We Glaze & Fire Your Pottery
When you've finished your design, leave your pottery with us!
Your piece will remain at Artventures to be professionally glazed and kiln-fired, transforming your design into a beautiful finished piece of pottery.
Because pottery requires time for glazing, firing, and cooling, finished pieces are not available to take home immediately after the workshop. Pickup information and estimated completion times will be provided by the studio.
