SEWING MACHINE BASICS: CREATE AN INFINITY SCARF
What This Workshop Is

Join Helen Plumridge-Hill* for a laid-back, practical introduction to sewing machine basics. Learn how to thread your machine, master fundamental stitches, troubleshoot common issues, and build confidence — all while making a wearable infinity scarf to take home.

Perfect if you've always wanted to use a sewing machine but weren't sure where to start, or if you've inherited a machine and need a friendly hand getting going.

What You'll Learn
  • How to thread your sewing machine (the bit that confuses everyone!)
  • Basic machine stitches
  • Intro to following a basic pattern
  • Common problems and how to fix them (thread tension, skipped stitches, bunching, etc.)
  • Practical tips for confident machine use

What You'll Make

One infinity scarf using pre-cut fabric and simple straight-stitch seaming. You'll leave with a finished, wearable piece and genuine confidence using a sewing machine.

Who It's For
  • Complete beginners with zero sewing experience
  • Anyone nervous about sewing machines
  • People wanting to refresh their skills before tackling bigger projects

No prior experience needed. Just bring curiosity and a willingness to have a go.

After This Workshop

You'll have the confidence and basic skills to join any of Helen's other Craft House workshops where some sewing proficiency is required.

Ready to get started? Book on and let's demystify the sewing machine!

Cost

£30 per person, includes all materials and equipment use.

Tutor Bio

Helen Plumridge-Hill is a Bingley-based sewer, maker and educator with a particular love of giving fabric a second life and giving people time to just create. Wherever possible, she works with reclaimed and repurposed textiles — vintage hauls, offcuts and remnants, worn garments, bedding and curtains — turning what might be thrown away into something new and wearable.

With over 25 years working in education and design, and more creative hobbies collected along the way than she can count, Helen finally picked up a sewing machine in 2023 and hasn't stopped since — sewing has become almost like meditation to her. Helen teaches relaxed, hands-on sessions that focus on building real confidence at the machine, whether that's a total beginner learning to thread up for the first time or someone ready to make their first garment. Her classes are as much about the process of sustainable, thoughtful making and connection as they are about the finished piece.
