About this Event
Class Description:
This hands-on adult sewing class is an in-depth introduction to the sewing machine and its many functions. Participants will learn the names and purposes of the machine’s major parts, how to properly set up and operate the machine, and how different settings and attachments affect the sewing process.
Rather than focusing on a single finished project, students will create a stitch sampler that allows them to experiment with and document a variety of machine stitches. As we work through the machine’s features, students will have the opportunity to practice different stitch types, stitch lengths and widths, and other basic machine settings.
Students Will Learn:
- Identify the major parts of a sewing machine and understand their functions
- Properly thread and prepare a machine for sewing
- Understand the purpose of the presser foot, feed dogs, bobbin, needle, tension, stitch selector, and other key components
- Learn basic machine safety and proper sewing practices
- Understand common machine stitch types and their uses
- Experiment with stitch length, width, and machine settings
- Practice straight stitching, zigzag stitching, and decorative/utility stitches
- Learn when and why different stitches are used
- Gain confidence troubleshooting common beginner machine issues
Finished Product: Stitch Sampler
Each participant will create a personalized stitch sampler featuring a variety of stitches explored during class. The sampler serves both as a hands-on learning exercise and a reference piece students can keep for future sewing projects.
Class Format:
Demonstration → Guided Machine Exploration → Stitch Practice → Sampler Construction → Review & Troubleshooting
Skill Level: Beginner / No Previous Sewing Experience Required
Class size is limited to 6 students, so be sure to register early!
