Traditionally used to carry precious commodities like coffee, tobacco and sugar – the Sámi-style leather pouch has been adapted for use by bush craftsmen the world over due to its durable and practical design! Sew and decorate your own pouch while learning about the history of the Sámi in Northern Europe and North America.
Highlights of the class include:
● Walk through every step from start to finish to make your personal pouch or bag.
● Work with Swedish reindeer leather, fish leather, wool, woven pewter, glass beads and bone to
customize your pouch or bag.
● Gain hands-on experience with Sámi-style sewing and decorative techniques.
● Learn about the culture, techniques, and spiritual connections that make Sámi duodji (traditional handicrafts) so special!
This project is appropriate for ages 12+ with adults/ages 16+ alone and is open to all skill levels. Please note that to complete this project, students need some hand strength and flexibility, as sewing leather and fur is more difficult than cloth. The materials fee covers the reindeer leather for one bag or pouch and leather cutter’s needle, thread, pattern, instructional handout, and other necessary supplies. Students may purchase additional decorative materials such as beads, antler and bone buttons/toggles, fish leather, wool or pewter thread from the instructor as they desire. Students are also encouraged to bring preferred ergonomic sewing tools as sewing leather may be more difficult than sewing cloth.
The class will break for lunch, and students are encouraged to join for a smoked fish chowder soup luncheon!
