Sept 24th: Providence Philosophy Club Monthly Meetup!

Join us on Thursday, September 24th as we host another meeting of our monthly philosophy club.

A few folks have tried saying bell hooks is not philosophy because she was a sociologist and those are two different depts/fields. To historicize, modern sociology grew out of 19th-century moral philosophy and the philosophy of history. Genre isn't neat and there is overlap. Enjoy the readings below!

Here are some of the questions to consider during the reading:

1. In your mind, do you have a clear, specific definition of love?
2. 1. Does it feel nebulous?
   2. If so, where did you come to this understanding of what love is?
   3. If not, do you believe in love at all?
3. Do you feel modern discussions of love (romantic and otherwise) are lacking?
4. What do you think of Hooks' model of love being an action in which you express honesty, care, affection, responsibility, respect, commitment, and trust?
5. 1. Do you feel that anything is missing from this list?
   2. Do you feel that there is anything on the list that is not a necessary part of love?
6. How can we continue to love people after they're gone?
7. Is it possible to love someone while hiding something from them?
8. Do you agree with Hooks' claim that men are taught and encouraged to lie, and that lying makes them more of a man?
9. Does love really know no shame?
10. What are some tangible ways that we can continue to uphold Hooks' dimensions of love (honesty, care, affection, responsibility, respect, commitment, and trust) towards a loved one who has passed away?
11. Do you feel like you worship death in any way?
12. To you personally, what societal trends best match Hooks' description of "worshiping death"?
