26 listopada Centrum Prawa Ochrony Zwierząt i Przyrody WPiA UW zaprasza na seminarium otwarte z udziałem dr Daniela Breeze’a z Loughborough University i Royal Historical Society, poświęcone wpływowi idei pokrewieństwa gatunków na prawo i politykę na przestrzeni ostatnich 200 lat.Claims of kinship with non-human animals have long been invoked to justify obligations towards them, but what kinship means, and what it can legitimately ground, remains contested. This workshop sets historical and contemporary understandings side by side. In the nineteenth century, Darwinian descent gave kinship a new biological authority, which reformers such as Henry Salt turned into a moral and political claim: if humans and animals differ only in degree, and humans have rights, then so do animals.
Today, scholars of more-than-human law and politics largely go beyond (abandon?) descent as the ground of kinship. Some treat kinship as something made: a chosen practice of care and responsibility that can extend across species lines. Others, drawing on Indigenous traditions, treat it as something inherited and place-based: a set of specific, enduring obligations to particular beings and lands, which cannot simply be chosen or extended at will. What is gained and lost in each understanding? Which of these 'kinships' can bear the weight of interspecies justice?
