About this Event
Celebrate the world premiere of See It Loud: The Globe Poster Story. Filmmakers John Lewis and Rei Perri have captured the legacy of Globe Poster through interviews with famous music artists who commissioned these iconic posters, the printers who brought them to life, and those carrying its legacy forward at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Bobby Rush, John Waters, Solomon Burke, Chuck Brown, Wayne Coyne, Rosa Pryor, Ellen Lupton, and more talk about Globe’s impact on popular culture and the American visual landscape.
Screening is approximately 1 hour. Doors open at 6:30. Film screening at 7pm.
Following the premiere of See It Loud, you are invited to take advantage of a unique opportunity to shop original Globe posters from the Cicero Archives and view the exhibition, Globe Posters for the People in MICA’s Pinkard Gallery.
Globe Poster Printing Corp.
For more than 80 years a Globe Poster made you look! Fluorescent colors and bold typography brightened city streets and country crossroads shouting the names of the most iconic artists and entertainment acts of the 20th century. James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Tupac and countless more music stars relied on Globe posters to let people know they were coming to town.
Globe Lives on at MICA
When Globe Poster ceased production in 2010, a concerned group of Baltimoreans and MICA students rallied support for MICA’s acquisition of the Globe Collection the following year. Since then, the original wood type, printing blocks, and tools of the trade have been utilized as a teaching resource and as the foundation of a working press producing new posters inspired by Globe’s iconic style. As the steward of the Globe Collection, MICA is thrilled to welcome you to its campus to celebrate the world premiere of See It Loud: The Globe Poster Story.
Cicero Archive of Original Globe Posters
The former owners of Globe Poster, Bob and Frank Cicero, kept an archive of original Globe posters (ranging from 1988 – 2011). For the first time, a selection of these posters – many one-of-a-kind, will be for sale through a partnership with the Ciceros and MICA. Poster genres include R&B, Soul, Go-Go, Gospel, carnivals, sports, entertainment and more. A portion of the sale of each poster will benefit the Globe Collection and Press at MICA.
