St. Paul’s has a new art exhibit in the Upper Room Gallery through November 29. There will be an Artist Talk on Sunday, November 1, at 10:30 a.m. This plant-inspired exhibit features paintings by local artist Barbara Thompson, a painter inspired by a lifelong fascination with nature. She paints to record botanical beauty and can get lost in the details of a flower or ear of field corn. Nature often helps create core memories, and she has learned that creating work based on common Midwest vegetation inspires many viewers to recall fond experiences. This shared love of nature, celebrated on a canvas, offers ongoing joy. Growing up in the Midwest, Barb learned to immerse herself in each season and enjoy botanicals as they bloom and change with the weather. Her lifelong passion has been communicating visual ideas, whether it be through the computer or paintbrush. With a background in graphic design, she enjoys styling her artwork for print applications. She currently gardens and paints in Cedar Rapids and has studio and gallery space in The Cherry Building. This exhibit includes pieces from her recent collection Seasonal Patterns. The collection brings together the comforting predictability of classic patterns—stripes, polka dots, and paisley—and infuses them with the untamed energy of Midwestern vegetation. It is a visual celebration of plants pushing through boundaries, demonstrating that nature always finds a way. Stop by the Upper Room Gallery any time the church is open!
