About this Event
Following the great success of our exclusive screening of "The Eternal Roots," the 54th edition of the Understanding Palestine Series will feature another exclusive event. This session will showcase three animated short films focusing on the critical and deeply relevant issue of refugees.
The films are made by two Palestinian artists:
Mahmoud Salameh
- "Freedom Is Mine" An animated film about the detention of refugees, and the power of imagination.
- "Lost Dream" is a 2-minute silent animated film that follows a young boy displaced by war. In an instant, an explosion tears through his refugee camp, destroying the future he once imagined. Forced onto a leaking boat, he embarks on a desperate journey toward safety; one faced by countless children across the world.
Rami Abbas (Spain-based)
- “Hide & Seek” is an animated short film that narrates the story of a child and his fish on their journey into the unknown, following the raid on the child’s town during the ongoing war ravaging his country. The short film captures the steps of this journey and its transformations, concluding as the child reaches one of the coasts.
The event includes:
- Storytelling and context by Yousef
- Recorded message by Rami
- food
Entry: $15 or $10 (conc. to be paid at the door). Proceeds go to film project.
Home-made Arab food for extra $20 (proceeds go to local caterer)

Understanding Palestine Series started in March 2024 as a response to the growing interest among Australians in the Palestinian issue, and the limited resources in English about the history, literature and culture of Palestine.
The Series is organized and delivered by Yousef Alreemawi; one of Australia's leading experts in the history and culture of Palestine.
Since then, Yousef has delivered 49 lectures in in Northcote, and 10 lectures in Mama Chen in Foostcray. Additionally, he took the series to Sydney, Hobart, Brisbane and Adelaide.
