Billions of flies. One lake. An entire ecosystem. 🪰In northern Iceland, there’s a lake called Mývatn, which literally translates to “midge lake.” Every year, swarms of tiny flies emerge in clouds so thick that researchers work right in the middle of them. And those midges do something remarkable: they shape everything from the algae in the water to the fish, the spiders, and even the plants on land.
Join us for Science on Tap as APSU biologist Dr. Jamie Botsch takes you to the shores of Mývatn to explore how these insects influence the landscape around them during his talk: "The landscape flies built: The story of a lake, billions of insects, and an ecosystem without boundaries.”
