About this Event
Join us for the opening of SCHORT/APRON, a textile art exhibition by Karen Maes and Carin Baeten.
For years Karen and Carin have been fascinated by aprons. They wear them with love in their studios, and aprons have been part of their lives since childhood: the aprons of their mothers and aunts, smelling of home, work and care.
The apron is a simple everyday uniform that protects, but it also carries a history of labour, care and the often invisible work long associated with women. Comfort and domesticity, but also roles and expectations that are visible again today, partly through the rise of 'tradwife' culture.
In SCHORT/APRON the apron goes beyond its practical use and becomes fashion, memory and imagination: a wearable work of art that tells stories and invites you to look again at an ordinary garment. Karen and Carin made around fifty unique aprons for this exhibition, all available for purchase.
