Welcome to Sankofa Nights an immersive live cultural experience that celebrates the history, resilience, and artistic legacy of the African diaspora through music, poetry, storytelling, and visual arts. Inspired by the Ghanaian Adinkra symbol Sankofa—meaning “to go back and retrieve what has been forgotten”—the production takes audiences on a powerful journey from the villages of Africa to the birth and evolution of African American music and culture. At the heart of the experience is the most influential decade in modern Black musical history: 1968 to 1978, with special emphasis on the transformative power of the 1970s. This era gave rise to some of the most defining sounds, messages, and movements in Black America, as artists used music to reflect the climate of the times, speak to struggle and liberation, and celebrate Black pride, unity, and creativity. Through live performances, historical narration, multimedia visuals, and original theatrical storytelling, Sankofa Nights explores the evolution of African American artistic expression—from African drumming, Negro spirituals, gospel, jazz, blues, and Motown to soul and funk.
More than a performance, Sankofa Nights is an educational and inspirational experience that honors the ancestors, highlights the cultural power of the 1970s, celebrates Black excellence, and inspires future generations to embrace their history, identity, and collective power.
