Before traditional music could disappear from the hills and small towns of Southwestern Pennsylvania, Penn State professor and renowned music historian Samuel Preston Bayard went out and saved it. Between 1928 and 1963, he sought out fiddlers and fifers, listened to their tunes, wrote them down, and ultimately preserved more than 1,000 pieces of regional music. On Saturday, November 7, at 7 PM, Snappin’ Bug String Band, hailing from Pittsburgh, brings Bayard’s remarkable collection back to life at Pine Grove Hall with fiddle, banjo, fife, and upright bass, joined by Ken Waldman, “Alaska’s Fiddling Poet,” Jerry Zolten, and Richard Sleigh. Together, they’ll celebrate the music, stories, and traditions Bayard helped save—and the musicians who are keeping them alive today.
