HOSPITALITY: WELCOMING THE OTHER IN CERVANTES’S WORKS
https://samla.ballastacademic.com/Home/S/19575
In an era of shifting borders and global migrations, the concept of hospitality—the act of receiving and entertaining strangers—has never been more relevant. In line with the theme of SAMLA 99, we invite proposals exploring the ethics, politics, and aesthetics of hospitality in the Cervantine universe. Cervantes’s works feature travelers, captives, and pilgrims who navigate the shifting boundaries between “guest” and “host,” from the inns of Don Quixote to the Mediterranean crossings of the Novelas ejemplares and the itinerant encounters of Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda. Across these texts, hospitality functions as a measure of humanity and a testing ground for ethical obligation and power. We seek presentations that address these themes through two primary lenses:
1. Thematic and Literary Representations
How does Cervantes reconfigure the relationship between host and guest in early modern Spain?
What are the ethical and social consequences when hospitality is denied, corrupted, or weaponized (as in the Duke and Duchess’s castle)?
How do Cervantes’s works construct the figure of the “stranger” or the “other”—including Moriscos, captives, and foreigners—and where do they expose the limits of institutional or conditional welcome?
How do the itinerant journeys and episodic encounters in Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda reimagine hospitality across cultural, religious, and geographic boundaries?
2. Cervantes Studies and Pedagogy
How might we practice “intellectual hospitality” within contemporary pedagogical landscapes?
What role can Cervantes’s works—particularly the transnational and cross-cultural dynamics of Persiles—play in fostering empathy, critical awareness, and inclusion in the twenty-first-century classroom?
