Labyrinth Ontario is pleased to present Sami Abu Shumays and his Music Group for the finale of the Toronto Makam Music Forum!
A culmination of a week-long workshop, this advanced group of musicians will be performing Ansaak and Awidti Eini by legendary Egyptian vocalist Umm Kulthum.
During the 20th century, Egyptian composers developed a new genre of song in conjunction with Umm Kulthum - the Ughniyya, known in English as the “Long Song.” These songs range in length from 40-90 minutes each, depending on the performance - which includes repetitions, variations, and improvisations.
Although most contemporary singers of this repertory don’t perform the whole songs, for this special performance both songs will be played in their entirety.
