Join the Morven Sustainability Lab (MSL) for a screening of Salt Marsh, followed by a conversation with the film's subject, artist Mitchell Rasor, and MSL Faculty Director Beth Meyer.
Directed by Tom Bell and scored by Sonic Youth co-founder Lee Ranaldo, Salt Marsh follows Maine artist Mitchell Rasor as he draws the winter marshland of the Spears Farm Estuary Preserve on the Royal River in Yarmouth.
Working in the cold with marsh grass dipped in ink, Rasor turns the act of drawing into a form of attention, a way of holding onto a landscape that is always shifting and, in the face of climate change, slowly disappearing. As Rasor puts it, "There is definitely something about working with watercolor on paper and being in a salt marsh that speaks to each." The film weaves together his intimate, place-based practice with broader questions of memory, solitude, and perception, offering a quiet meditation on landscape and artistic process alike.
Following the screening, Rasor will join MSL Faculty Director Beth Meyer for a discussion of his work and practice.
