This exhibition explores a sense of place, both through the local landscapes of Sussex and through part-imagined landscapes inspired by found photographs.Sally Pennington has lived and worked in Sussex for most of her life, and she has always spent a lot of time walking and drawing in the landscape. She tries to convey the atmosphere of a place and a sense of layered time through sometimes slightly ambiguous settings which evoke a particular mood. The effect of light in a glade of trees, or of mist or sunlight seeds or cobwebs floating across the wildbrooks can capture a feeling or trigger a memory.
The paintings of places sourced from ‘found’ photographs explore a different kind of emotion – one less based on memory and more on imagination and dreaming, where the source image becomes a substitute for the real landscape and is in itself, the ‘place’ to explore.
Sally has a degree in Painting from the Open College of the Arts, and is a member of the Association of Sussex Artists. She has exhibited in various local exhibitions and galleries.
