About this Event
Join us for a special evening of literature, art, culture, and community at Casa Hispánica at Columbia University as we welcome acclaimed artist, novelist, and filmmaker Leopoldo Goût for an intimate conversation celebrating his newest novel, Rooted.
Hosted by Dr. Nick J. Figueroa from the Department of Latin American and Iberian Cultures, in collaboration with the Hispanic Institute and the Latinos Urbanos Book Club, this intimate event brings together readers, students, artists, and members of the community for an engaging conversation exploring storytelling, identity, cultural memory, creativity, and the intersections of literature, art, and film.
Born and raised in Mexico City and trained in sculpture at Central Saint Martins in London, Goût has built a multidisciplinary career spanning literature, contemporary art, film, television, and sound. His visual work has been exhibited internationally, including at MoMA PS1, and his film and television work includes projects for Netflix, HBO, CBS, and Lionsgate. As a novelist, he is the author of Ghost Radio, Piñata, Monarca, the Genius trilogy and more, with his writing exploring the intersections of horror, technology, history, migration, and cultural memory.
His newest novel, Rooted, is a haunting exploration of family, history, cultural memory, and repatriation. The story follows Aurora, a successful art lawyer who returns to Mexico City after helping repatriate stolen artifacts, including a mysterious statue of the Aztec god known as The Flayed One. As reality begins to unravel around her, Aurora is forced to confront buried family secrets and histories that refuse to remain hidden.

There’s nothing wrong with Aurora.
A successful art lawyer, she has returned to Mexico to celebrate a recent campaign for the repatriation of stolen artifacts―in particular a mysterious statue of an Aztec god, The Flayed One.
But Mexico City isn’t as she remembered. Nothing is. Elements of her past hint at darkness and power, and reality begins to crack and warp the streets.
There’s nothing wrong with Aurora.
