About this Event
Third Place Books, in partnership with Red May and Haymarket Books, welcomes author and political philosopher Rodrigo Nunes, one of the sharpest interpreters of the right-wing turn in world politics, for a conversation about his new book, . Sean Landis of Red May will join in discussion.
In his new book, Anatomy of Disintegration: What Brazil Reveals About the Global Far Right, Nunes uses his own country as a point of departure to make sense of where the right's appeal comes from. Arguing that the contemporary far right is better understood not as an effort to block but as an attempt to harness and accelerate forces of social disintegration set in motion by capital and intensified by the crisis of neoliberalism, he outlines the dystopian horizon it is moving us toward.

About Anatomy of Disintegration. . .
For four years, Jair Bolsonaro led Brazil and the popular, far-right movement that bore his name. His rise, defeat, and the chaos he left in his wake reflect patterns that are playing out in several countries, from the US to Argentina to India. In Anatomy of Disintegration, Rodrigo Nunes uses Brazil as a point of departure to make sense of why the far right is on the rise all over the world, where its appeal comes from, and explain the dystopian horizon it is moving toward.
Through sharp, original analyses of the social composition of its supporters, the material and affective conditions that underpin it, and the mainstream's inability to respond to it, Rodrigo Nunes argues that the contemporary far right is better understood not as an effort to block but as an attempt to harness and accelerate forces of social disintegration set in motion by capital and intensified by the crisis of neoliberalism.
Rodrigo Nunes is an associate professor in philosophy at PUC-Rio, Brazil, and a visiting fellow at the University of Essex, UK. He is the author of Neither Vertical nor Horizontal: A Theory of Political Organisation and Organisation of the Organisationless: Collective Action After Networks. His articles have appeared in Boston Review, Les Temps Modernes, Radical Philosophy, Jacobin, and The Guardian. He lives between London and Rio de Janeiro.
